View of the Leuser Ecosystem

The Leuser Ecosystem has an amazingly high biodiversity. Of the 10,000 plant species recorded in the West Indo-Malayan Region, an estimated 45% are found in The Leuser Ecosystem.

At least 194 species of reptiles and amphibians and 387 bird species have been recorded. The Leuser Ecosystem has at least 127 mammal species, including the Sumatran elephant, the Sumatran tiger, the Sumatran rhinoceros, and the Sumatran orangutan. About 8,500 different plant species grow in the beach, swamp, lowland, mountain and alpine ecosystems of the Leuser Ecosystem. Even so, much basic biological work remains to be done.
