18 November 2011

LIF through the Watershed Protection Programme in Aceh (funded by NZAID), is currently facilitating the development of Community Forest (HKm) activities in Central Aceh and Bener Meriah districts. Initially, the heads of these two districts (Central Aceh and Bener Meriah) had filed a request to the Minister of Forestry to designate a working area for Community Forest (HKm) activities. Following up on this request, the Ministry of Forestry  sent a verification team on 17 to 18 November 2011 to verify the potential site for this working area and the presence of forest farmers’ groups in the subdistricts of  Celala in Central Aceh district and Bukit in Bener Meriah district. Community forests (HKM) are  state forests used primarily to empower local communities. The empowerment of local communities is important to enhance their capability and autonomy and allow them to get the benefits of forest resources and improve their welfare in an optimum, fair and sustainable manner.
