TFCA SUMATRA
PROVIDES GRANT FOR PROTECTION OF ACEH SELATAN-SINGKIL STRATEGIC AREA
Tropical Forest
Conservation Action for Sumatra (TFCA Sumatra) is a program for the
realization of the debt-for-nature swap scheme between the United States
Government and the Government of Indonesia. This could be used as
an additional funding mechanism for the conservation of tropical forests
in Indonesia. For this purpose, TFCA Sumatra has involved Conservation
International-Indonesia (CI) and Yayasan Keanekaragaman Hayati Indonesia
(Kehati) as Swap Partners. Yayasan Kehati has been appointed as the
Secretariat for the TFCA Sumatra program.
TFCA-Sumatra has
approved the funding of a tropical forest conservation program for
implementation by the Leuser International Foundation (LIF) in the
Singkil Swamp area (within the Leuser Ecosystem).
The signing of the grant
agreement between Yayasan Kehati as the Administrator of TFCA Sumatra
and Leuser International Foundation (YLI) for this Aceh
Selatan-Singkil Strategic Area Protection Program for Sustainable
Community-Based Conservation was done on February 24, 2011.
The objectives of this project are as follows:
1. To establish
a clear land
ownership system and assist
the development of a forest protection system for Singkil Swamp.
2. To mitigate
human-wildlife
conflict and ensure the
protection of biodiversity
by reinforcing the status of
the Singkil-Bengkung wildlife corridor.
3. To support
community-based restoration
of the area.
